Greased Lightning! Mayor of Wirral gripped by reality television
MAYOR of Wirral Andrew Hodson says he and wife Kathryn were "riveted" by a reality tv show following schools as they competed to perform hit musical Grease in London.
Wirral's own Wallasey School, in Leasowe, beat off challengers from 500 other schools and triumphed with a final "sing-off" against schools from Birmingham and Southend-on-Sea.
Pupils had to overcome their nerves and display their singing and dancing abilities, impressing a judging panel made up of vocal coach Zoe Tyler, choreographer Stacey Haynes and presenter Duncan James, a member of the band Blue.
Here's a video by Vengeance47 showing some of the auditions at Wallasey School:
Cllr Hodson has invited the young people who took part to a special reception at Wallasey Town Hall on Friday afternoon.
He said: "Like people around the country, the Mayoress and I were riveted as the series progressed.
"It was gripping television, and the students really did Wirral proud. This is our way of recognising their achievements."
Wallasey School headteacher Philip Duffy flew back from his summer holiday in Italy to see the final performance.
And his verdict? "An amazing and very emotional experience."
