Come Dine with Me! - highlights from the Wirral Tourism Awards

By Lorna Hughes on Nov 5, 09 11:54 AM

FORGET the glitz and glamour of the Oscars.

Here in Wirral we have our very own ceremony celebrating the achivements of the borough's finest.

It's called the Wirral Tourism Awards and it took place last night at Thornton Hall Hotel.

Winners included Carol Hannam, a receptionist at Europa Pools in Birkenhead, the team at the Portrait House, Church Farm in Thurstaston and Port Sunlight Museum.

Special awards went to Lionel Bolland of Port Sunlight Village Trust and Paul Chatten, who is retiring from his role as curriculum leader at Wirral Met.

You can find a full list of winners here - and here's my pick of (strictly tongue in cheek) highlights from the night:

(1) Compere Roger Summerskill asking the audience (including Derek Miller, the man in charge of Birkenhead's Grange and Pyramids) their favourite place to shop.

The unanimous response? "Liverpool One". Oops.

(2) Mayor of Wirral Andrew Hodson turning stand-up comedian during his opening speech:

"I've just been to Arrowe Park Hospital and I made my way down the corridor and into the lift. Standing in the lift was a gentleman in a white coat standing next to a very large machine with wires and tubes.

"I looked at him and said 'I'd hate to be hooked up to that'. He said 'So would I, it's a carpet cleaner'."

(3) On Monday night there was fighting talk of "absolute lies", "yahoo politics" and "something rotten at the heart of this council" in the council chamber.

But last night, council leader Steve Foulkes and Jeff Green were on their best behaviour and sharing a table at the Tourism Awards, quietly tucking into their salmon, roast chicken and apple crumble.

Conservatives Sue Taylor and John Hale, Lib Dems Bob Moon and Gill Gardiner were also on the table, as was the Mayor - who wasn't quite as subdued and playfully heckled fellow Conservative Chris Blakeley when he stepped onto the stage to present the "Unseen Hero" award.
