Glum councillors fun
WE'RE as guilty as anyone of encouraging the subjects of photographs to make use of whatever fledgling acting skills they have to convey emotion in a picture.
'Look miserable', we sometimes say, 'look happy', or 'look frustrated', depending on the particular story they are illustrating.
This may seem like another media con to the uninitiated but before you start calling me 'Ant and Dec', consider this argument.
People naturally smile when they see a camera, we've all been taught that from birth.
But if you're doing a story about a fatal car crash, or something similar, the last thing we, or the reader, want to see is someone with a big grin on their face next to all the gory details.
It makes sense to ensure the emotion in the photograph matches the emotion in the article.
Now, in one of those moments when something seems so blindingly obvious once it's actually done, a website has been created to collect all such images, take them out of context and make them appear really rather funny.
Naturally, let's put the 'fatal car crash' example to one side and think about the worthy efforts of councillors, well drilled in the 'look........' approach.
Fine-tuned actors on the local, regional and sometimes national stage, councillors know the script and will turn on the emotion, knowing the deal is a mutually beneficial one.
So all hail http://glumcouncillors.tumblr.com/
Have a little look for yourself, and until you do here's an example of a glum (ex) councillor from our own backyard who is definitely not acting.

That's former New Brighton councillor Pat Hackett looking decidedly cheesed off with last May's election results, which saw him lose his long-held seat.
But such sincerity isn't the holy grail for glumcouncillors.com.
They want the face of trauma and untold suffering.....while one finger points at a hole in the road.
And if you scroll down to the bottom, you'll see our very own Liscard councillor Leah Fraser making a debut of hysterical proportions.
I'm sure Leah had a plan when she volunteered to attend a nearby farm, and hold a (very small) pumpkin.

But a giant marrow!
That's just asking for trouble....

...Matron!
